Anthropic Data Shows Minimal Demand for AI Emotional Support via Claude

Anthropic’s latest report reveals only 2.9% of users turn to its AI model Claude for emotional companionship, with conversations involving companionship or role-playing accounting for less than 0.5%. This contrasts sharply with perceptions of surging demand for AI companionship.

Analyzing 4.5 million conversations across Claude’s free and pro versions, Anthropic found most users prioritize work-related tasks, especially content creation. When emotional topics arise, users often seek advice on mental health, growth planning, or communication—focused on self-improvement and emotional management.

While some users may shift to seeking companionship during loneliness or low moods, such transitions occur in less than 50-round long dialogues and remain extremely rare.

Anthropic notes AI’s role in emotional companionship remains limited. Claude’s core value, it emphasizes, lies in knowledge generation and task support rather than emotional engagement.

The findings challenge assumptions about AI’s role in daily life, highlighting that practical utility still drives most user interactions with generative AI tools.
